Students will be able to compare and contrast U.S.A. sports and equipment with those of other countries around the world.
Students will be able to research the history about the sports and use that information in comparison.
Students will be able to identify prices relating to the sports and report greater, less than, or equal to amounts.
Students will be able to explain which country has the better sports using their background knowledge, newly learned knowledge, and opinion.

Learning station-A (SS)—Comparing sportsamong different countries of the world and their historyPurpose: The purpose of this station is for the students to see that not every sport is the same across the globe. There are many differences and similarities present. Students will be able to learn about the history of various sports and broaden their knowledge on the sport in general. They can look at the pricing, the gender playing, the equipment, etc.
Organization: There will be mini stations set up throughout the sports section of the store. They will include the following: basketball, baseball/softball, soccer, football, golf, and tennis. Students will have a recording sheet with them and take notes on different aspects of each sport. They will note what equipment is involved, the prices, etc. and then they will get on the computer back in the regular classroom to research on the computer about the history. On the computer, they will also search for other countries and their sports characteristics/history. The countries they will be researching include: Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Japan, and Australia. The class will be broken up into 6 groups of 5 students each, and they will spend approximately 20 minutes at each station. Once all of the research is complete, as a whole class, we will discuss and list our findings.
Learning Station-B (Math)—Comparisons among equipment prices between the different countries
Purpose: The purpose of this station is for the students to use what they learned in social studies and integrate math. They will recall prices that they researched to see how the U.S.A. stands up to the other countries with their values. They can work on their greater than, less than, and equal to skills.
Organization: This work will be done in the classroom. The students should already have their recording sheets with equipment prices from Walmart. On the computer, they will research more on the pricing of the other countries. Eight students will be on the computer at a time, for 15-20 minutes. While they are on the computer, the remainder of the students will be organizing their Walmart prices in order from cheapest to most expensive. During down time of the rotations, students will be able to work on math activities available in the bins on their desk clusters. No student should be sitting and doing nothing. The students can use this information and create a pricing number line and which they can fill in with all of their findings. They can illustrate it also, to make it more eye-catching and memorable.
Learning Stations-C (Language Arts)—Persuasive essay on which country has the better sports and/or equipment, rules, etc. (opinion)
Purpose: The purpose of this final station is for the students to use all of their findings from the other stations and integrate them into writing (language arts). This will serve as a wrap-up activity, using their opinion, background knowledge, and newly found information. The assignment is for the students to write a short persuasive essay, explaining which country has the better sports and why. This will enable the kids to use their creativity, and will make them think out of the box. The focus is for the students to clearly state their position or opinion and provide details as to why they feel that way.
Organization: This last activity will take place individually, at their desk clusters. This is the time to gather all of their information they found through research and write about their thoughts. I want them to persuade their readers and give effective information to back their thoughts up. This should again, take about 20 or so minutes. After everyone has completed this, I will gather their papers together and put them into a book format and bind it. I will make the front cover titled: “Whose Sport is Better…Mine or Yours?” and put our class’s name on it. By doing this, we can always have something to remind us of our visit to Walmart.
Assessment:
All of my assessments are going to be informal. I will not be giving any type of test. During the entirety of the day, I would be taking anecdotal notes of the children, their behaviors, and their work they are getting accomplished.
For social studies, my assessment would be simple observation of how well they could explain their findings during our whole group discussion. I would want detailed differences and similarities about the history, prices, equipment, etc. If the children cannot tell me any of this, I would then know that they did not do what was expected.
For math, I would like to assess the students by seeing that they made use of the greater, less than, and equal to signs. I would also like to see the pricing number line that I wanted them to work on to actually see the differences between the countries. The students need to at least have compared the U.S.A. to the other 5 countries that were being researched. I would like them to have compared more if they had time.
For language arts, I would give a check or check minus for their persuasive writing piece. A check would mean that the student clearly stated their position and gave backing details as to why they felt that way (at least 3 reasons). A check minus would be distributed if the child did not fill in the requirements for the persuasive prompt.
